They Didn't Teach Me This in Library School: Managing a Library Art Gallery
Brodsky, Karen
It seems a natural fit to have artwork in libraries. At Sonoma State University
Library, in Rohnert Park, California, we have committed to an art gallery in order to
support the liberal arts and sciences mission of the university. The library's exhibits
explore a diverse range of ideas, values, and intellectual and artistic expressions. In
working with artists, curators, educators, and collectors from the community, we
provide unique possibilities for supporting learning and discovery, and we give students,
faculty, and community members yet another reason to visit our library.

Partnering for Dollars: Using Grant Opportunities to Build Community and Provide Programming

"I'm off to the Arts Council." "I will be at the public radio station." These are the
excited statements from a busy librarian working to develop arts and lectures programs
at an academic library. Academic libraries have a rich history of providing
programs to enrich the lives of their students and faculty. For an academic library
without an active Friends group, allocating librarian time to partner with the community
is one way to ensure lively arts and lectures programs. By partnering for
national grants, we have been able to expand the breadth of our offerings while
maintaining energetic partnerships with the surrounding community. Such partnerships
ensure meaningful and timely programs for the students, faculty, and people
living within the Sonoma State University (SSU) area, which is located in Rohnert
Park, California. This chapter will discuss the partnerships on two grants-the
National Endowment for the Arts' Big Read project and the American Library Association's
Let's Talk about It project.

If You Build It Will They Come? Using a New Library Building to Establish a Culture of Marketing
Brodsky, Karen
While most college campuses have strong support for the
libraries, as competition on university campuses for limited financial resources
gets tougher, support for libraries can be more theoretical than
actual. Library users are unaware of the complexity of and expense required
for library services. Not only must libraries compete for limited
financial resources, they must also compete in a complex information
marketplace. Today, libraries must market themselves to their constituents
to ensure that services are utilized and appropriate resources are allocated
for all formats of library materials. By committing to a strong
marketing program, the University Library at Sonoma State University
developed strategic plans to gain broader support from faculty, students,
administrators and greater use of services. Libraries wishing to explore
the possibility of integrating marketing efforts or libraries in the process
of a move can adopt and/or adapt some of these techniques.
